No AC in 100°F heat? No heat on a cold night? I’ll tell you what to do right now.
First: call me — 866-402-5678. I answer between 7am and 9pm, seven days a week. If it’s the middle of the night and you can’t reach me, keep reading.
Before I get there — do these three things:
If your AC is blowing warm air
- Check the thermostat — is it set to “cool” and a temperature lower than the room? Is the battery dead? Is the display blank?
- Check the breaker panel — look for a tripped breaker labeled “AC,” “condenser,” or “air handler.” Flip it fully OFF and back ON (not just reset).
- Check the outside unit — is the fan spinning? Is there a humming noise but no fan? If the fan’s not spinning, turn the system OFF at the thermostat immediately — running the compressor with no airflow will damage it in 15 minutes.
If your heater won’t turn on
- Check the thermostat — mode on “heat,” setpoint above room temp, batteries fresh.
- Check the furnace switch — there’s usually a light-switch-style toggle on or near the furnace cabinet. Confirm it’s ON.
- Check the breaker — furnaces have a dedicated breaker even if they run on gas (the blower is electric).
- If it’s gas and you smell gas — leave the house and call the gas company (SoCalGas: 1-800-427-2200) before you call me.
If the indoor coil or copper lines are iced over
- Turn the AC OFF at the thermostat — running a frozen system will flood your house when it thaws.
- Switch the fan to “ON” (not auto) — this helps thaw the coil faster.
- Call me. Icing is usually low refrigerant charge or a dirty filter — both are quick fixes if caught early.
What counts as an emergency (and what doesn’t)
Real emergency — call me day or night, 7am–9pm:
- No cooling and interior temps over 85°F
- No heat and interior temps under 60°F
- Burning smell or visible smoke from equipment
- Water leaking from indoor coil onto drywall or flooring
- Carbon monoxide detector sounding near the furnace
Not an emergency — still call, but next-day is fine:
- AC is short-cycling but still cooling
- Weird noise from the outside unit
- Thermostat is glitchy
- One room is warmer than the rest
- Filter is due
What I charge for emergencies
Same as any other day. No after-hours surcharge. No weekend premium. That’s one of the benefits of solo operation — no crew overtime to pay for.
What I won’t do at 2am
Show up. I stop taking calls at 9pm because I need to sleep to work tomorrow. If your issue is a true life-safety emergency (gas leak, CO alarm, fire), call 911 or SoCalGas. Otherwise, I’ll be the first call you make in the morning.
